Now, here's high school English teacher Laura Niverson of Tucson, Arizona. 2019 was a very rough year for me.

I lost my 24-year-old cousin who was my best friend and more of a sister to me.

I lost her to cancer in May and my students rallied

around me when that happened and they took care of me. While I was gone, you

know on bereavement my students filled the notebook with notes of encouragement and

notes of sympathy to give to me when I got back so that I would know that I wasn't alone. And I don't think I could ever receive a gift better than that.

It meant so much to me that these kids, these teenagers 15, 16, 17 years old took the time to write heartfelt notes to me, letting

me know that I'll be okay.

And every time I feel like my world is slipping away from me and I can't do this anymore without my cousin,

I read those notes.

And I find comfort in my students who call, to this day they call me mom and they are my children. And that is my story of kindness.
