Metabolic conditions like diabetes are on the rise, and the need for blood sugar management is critical. In this episode, Dr. Eran Elinav shares the science behind a new test that predicts your personal sugar level rise to foods, based on data from your microbiota, blood, body composition, and other clinical details. In the research, the personalized diet generated by the algorithm was slightly more effective in balancing blood sugar than following a diet created by an expert. Learn more about what steps you can take! (Plus, hear details on the first-ever vaginal microbiome transplant.) https://drruscio.com/?p=48739

0:41.4 | Today's podcast was a very interesting conversation with Dr. Aran Elanov, and we discussed |
0:49.7 | findings that he published in the journal Cell from 2017. And in his paper, they looked at a number |
0:58.3 | of factors, including a microbiota assessment, so a stool test that would assess the world of |
1:05.5 | bacteria in the gut with attempts to better be able to personalize an individual's diet based upon blood sugar response. |
1:15.9 | And what they found was their measures were actually more effective than your standardized |
1:22.8 | assessment that would be garnered from a glycemic index. And part of this is because the glycemic index is based upon a population average, if you will. |
1:34.3 | So 100 people are assessed for how they react to potatoes, and the glycemic index is a derivative of the average. |
1:41.3 | However, of course, with averages, you have people at the extreme high and low end of that |
1:48.1 | calculation or of that data set. |
1:50.9 | So they found that their multi-point assessment, including a microbiota array, was better |
2:00.0 | able to predict using a tool like the glycemic index. |
2:05.4 | Now, what's so interesting about this is they validated their work, and a spinoff lab was created, |
2:13.4 | and the first thing I think about when I hear a spin-off lab is they're using cheap technology, |
2:20.3 | they're not using the same methodology, and this is a profit first and science second operation. |
