Summary

The term “church discipline” might have a negative connotation in the ears of many, but the team wants to dispel some of the misconceptions about it. Just what is “church discipline?” When needed, it’s a component of discipleship. So, when is church discipline necessary and justifiable? Where does the authority to exercise it come from? The fact that church discipline has been abused, and—at times—performed in a cult-like manner also cannot be ignored. So, it’s important to take a close look at the threefold purpose of church discipline and its aftermath, which is different in every case. 1:03.8	My name is Todd Pruitt, and I'm joined, as always, by my friends Amy Bird and Carl Truman.
1:10.6	And we want to talk a little bit today about a subject that I believe we've addressed a couple of years ago,
1:11.4	and periodically it'll come up at least as a part of a larger conversation. But given that this is something
1:17.9	that if you're involved with or a member of a reformed or Presbyterian Church or a reformed
1:23.9	Baptist Church, you're going to see at some point, or at least hear about.
1:31.4	And that is the issue of church discipline.
1:43.5	Historically, one of the marks of the church has typically been understood along with the preaching of the word and the right administration of the sacraments.
1:49.7	Very often, a third mark is mentioned, and that is discipline.
1:58.3	The church is to exercise proper discipline of its members.
2:03.6	Of course, the word discipline and discipleship are both, these are connected words because the discipline of the church is not merely to be seen as something negative, but as a
2:08.3	means by which I am disciples through the fellowship and the ministry of my brothers and
2:15.9	sisters within the body of Christ.
2:24.4	But I want to begin before we kind of get into some of the issues of purpose and some of the practical implications, to start out, first of all, with the biblical justification
2:29.8	for church discipline, Carl and Amy, and to talk a little bit about, I mean, obviously we go
2:35.6	to Matthew chapter 18, we go to 1st Corinthians chapter 5, but for people who come out of
2:42.4	Christian traditions that don't really have a category for church discipline, which is probably
2:47.6	most evangelicals in the United States, who've never seen
