Summary

In his book Break Through Pain, meditation expert Shinzen Young says that pain separates us from the divine, and learning to handle it skillfully is akin to grinding it into sand. In this conversation, Martha is recovering from surgery and describes using Young’s book to map and define her pain. She explains that pain is nature calling us to return to our bodies, but it doesn’t necessarily equate to suffering. There is magic in our minds that can transform pain into wisdom. Welcome to the Gathering Pod, the audio version of my weekly gathering room broadcast. I'm Martha Beck.

Hi guys. Hello. This is the Gathering Room with Martha Beck. And I'm coming at you from a whole new

0:15.0

spot in my room because I just had surgery on my foot. I had the surgeon went in and he did saw the bone of my

0:25.0

tiny toe, not the toe bone, but the one above it, the metatarsal. He did saw it in pieces and then

0:30.4

he pinned it to the another, the bone next to it with a chevron. That's why the bed is, the bed is shaky. So if I, if it shakes a little, I'm very sorry,

0:40.3

but I'm on a bed with my foot up and have been that way for almost three weeks now.

0:46.7

It's kind of a great way to spend the summer, you guys. I mean, just to be able to say,

0:52.8

no, no, I can't. Would you please catch me? It's been awesome.

0:57.5

So, thank you, Paul, for saying, mine shows 105. Yes, I went to 125. So I thought today I would

1:05.3

talk to you guys about healing because it's something we all need in our hearts, our bodies, our souls, and sometimes

1:12.5

our minds. And I've been doing a bunch of it up here. I mean, when you go in for orthopedic

1:18.9

surgery, I've had other surgeries, and they were soft tissue and they were no fun. But soft tissue,

1:24.3

as you know, if you've ever had a cut, heals in about two weeks, if it's kept well. Bone takes a lot longer. as you know, if you've ever had a cut. Heels in about two weeks, if it's kept well.

1:29.2

Boone takes a lot longer, as you know, if you've ever broken anything. And so, yeah, when they go in

1:34.8

and they read, they basically do carpentry in there, like with all your little bells and whistles.

1:40.2

And the pain level is quite different. They didn't tell me it would be, and they were right.

1:46.6

So I had more incentive to focus on healing over the last two weeks than I've had for a long

1:51.8

time, actually.

1:53.1

And I hope this doesn't sound gross, but I was kind of looking forward to it, and I kind

1:57.5

of loved it.

1:58.6

And it was not fun.

2:00.5

I'm just going to say it was seriously
