In his 2022 talk from Ted X Sydney, social work professor Chio Chi, Revulo, lays out all

of the harmful ways certain values from Western colonization led to discrimination and made

so much of the rich diversity of humanity invisible.

After the break, he offers a far more liberating vision for the queer community.

I love this song from the first time I heard it.

I was 14 growing up in public housing in Western Sydney.

So maybe a little too old for this Disney classic from Pocahontas.

But it spoke to me.

I saw something of myself in it.

At this stage, I think I knew I was queer.

I mean, come on, I was rocking out to Disney.

Seriously, what a queer kid.

But I was also from a specific indigenous heritage with conservative views and values.

I didn't feel like I could fit into any of the boxes that were being presented to me.

Straight, gain, Figgy N, Australian.

I couldn't pick just one color to paint with.

Prior to colonization, sexuality amongst many of our Pacific islands across the region was fluid.

Men would have sex with men without the stigma or shame afforded it today.
