What happens when a simple fight turns into something deadly?

On July 1st, 1978, a young man was out for the evening

and got into an altercation with a passing stranger, a fight that ended up costing him his life

and creating a 10-year-long cold case. So if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled,

sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder.

Andrew P. born in 1956 and also known as Andrew Ronald Smith, was 22 years old when he moved from Victoria to Perth in 1975 and began working as a State Energy Commission laborer.

Living alone in a Salvation Army hostel, Andrew was known to be a casual drinker at many

of the Perth inner city hostels and was often seen at the Paddington, the Criterion, the Imperial,

the Railway, the Globe, and the Victoria.

No one really thought anything of this new addition to the area,

and Andrew kept a relatively low profile and kept his head down.

After only a few years in Perth, tragedy struck when on July 1, 1978,

Andrew P. was seen drinking at the Paddington Hotel's infamous

basement tube bar, left at about 9 p.m., and began to make his way to a nearby betting shop

to collect his earnings. At 9.30 p.m. he was seen talking to a newsboy just about 500 meters from the bar when an unknown man approached him and told him not to hassle the boy.

A witness heard Andrew tell the stranger, what's it got to do with you, before a short fistfight took place in which Andrew, much larger than the other man, prevailed, and the stranger ran off

muttering about getting even.
