Summary
On Sunday, a mob of protesters ransacked Brazil’s capital, claiming that the recent Presidential election had been rigged. The riots, eerily reminiscent of the United States Capitol attack, were carried out in the name of Brazil’s former President, Jair Bolsonaro, a political figure who has been described as the “Trump of the Tropics.” Andrew Marantz, a New Yorker staff writer, was in Brazil during November’s election, when another former President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, defeated Bolsonaro. He joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the contagiousness of far-right political movements in the age of social media.

My colleague Andrew Morantz has thought a lot about the contagiousness of far-right political movements, especially in the age of social media. He was in Brazil during the presidential election. Hi, Andrew. Hey, how's it going? Good. Thanks for being here. Absolutely. So the first thing that came to my mind, and I think to a lot of people's minds when they saw this imagery coming out of Brazil, was, you know, this is another January 6th. And I don't know, in a way, I've almost been feeling kind of bad about that because it's like this almost like toxic American centristism. But at the same time, there are a lot of similarities. |
| 1:46.2 | I mean, even just the fact that there were a lot of chance in English and, you know, that we have a group of right-wing protesters here who are making claims of election fraud. |
| 1:54.8 | And so I'm wondering what you think of the January 6 comparisons and like how fair they are. |
| 1:58.4 | Yeah. |
| 1:58.8 | This is the new American exceptionalism. We're like, we used to export Disney movies and now we fair they are. Yeah. This is the new American exceptionalism. |
| 2:01.1 | We're like, we used to export Disney movies and now we export Democratic terrorism. |
| 2:05.1 | I mean, yeah, I do think the comparisons are pretty fair. |
| 2:08.5 | You know, as you say, there were English hashtags. |
| 2:11.1 | There were English signs. |
| 2:11.9 | There were people holding up a banner on top of the Congress building that said, like, we want the source code in English, |
