welcome to the Irish History Podcast. My name is Finn de Warr and this is

Policing Ireland a history of the Garthi.

Ireland's police force on Gartha Shreakona, emerged in a tumultuous period in Irish history.

Immediately after the War of Independence, the government were tasked with founding a new police force.

That they established an unarmed force in the Garthi is often lauded as one of the early successes

of independence.

However, as is so often the case, the history of the Garthi is far more complex than this simplistic

narrative.

In this episode I interview Dr Vicky Conway, an associate professor in law in Dublin City University.

Thicky is a leading expert on policing in Ireland.

She not only published a book on the history of the Garthi,

but sits on the of being policed in Ireland. The name again is policed. I'll put a link in the show notes below.

In this interview, Vicky reveals the history of the Garthie from its earliest days when it was

rocked by a near mutiny to how it dealt with the troubles in the 1970s and 80s when the risks of serving on the force dramatically increased.
