Hello and welcome to the Red Box politics podcast in the Times. I'm Matt Chorley.

Now look we've become used to extraordinary days in Westminster

perhaps even immune to them but Wednesday September the 4th 2019 will be right up there

if and when someone comes to write the history books.

Largely because so much has happened the day began with all the fallout from Rebel Touri MPs 21 of them

kicked out of the party for rebelling on Brexit.

We had Boris Johnson's first outing at PMQs a spending review as the Chancellor

Sajid Jaffid announced billions of pounds of spending.

Then rebel MPs took on the agenda in the House of Commons, passed a bill to delay Brexit

until after October 31st, and then Boris Johnson making the case from an election he says he doesn't want

and then didn't get it. So this is it. This is the day is it unfolded. I've tried to

speak to as many people as possible to paint a picture of what was going on.

Bear with us, there'll be traffic noise, protester noise,

background noise, even buskers.

But this is a picture of a hard day's fight. Well, good morning. It's the morning after the nightmare before for Boris Johnson,

waking up in Downing Street this morning having had a pretty bad day

of the office yesterday has to be said.

First of all he lost his majority when the former Toy Minister, Philip Lee, got up and walked across the Commons to join the Lib Dems.

Then he lost the big vote. Rebel Tory MPs uniting with opposition MPs to take control of the parliamentary agenda with a big

old majority as well over the government.

Then he lost 21 MPs including was it eight cabinet ministers including Philip Hammond David

Gorek Warri Stuall in the cabinet until July all booted out of the Tory party for
