Hi, gentle listeners. It's Andrew, and this is scary stories to tell on the pod.

It's a podcast all about scary stories, urban legends, and spooky things you tell us about.

And folks, we've reached it. It is the big day. Halloween, the feast of Sowan, the one day of the

year when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is of its most narrow.

And while unfortunately, Anna and Jason and I can't be together to record today, we thought

it still might be fun as a special little Halloween treat to give you a ghost

storytelling.

And I racked my brain trying to think of which author to read because there's so many good

ones.

And I thought what might be kind of fun is to go back to a figure who many consider to be the

father of the modern ghost story, or at least that's

what Stephen King says. His name is M.R. James. And he was a medieval historian in the late

1800s, but then in the early 1900s, he became the headmaster at a small boarding school

in Great Britain. And once a year, he would gather all the students in his office by the fireplace,

and he would tell them an original ghost story.

And over the decades, these stories became so popular and began to spread that they got

collected into one large tome, which I believe is called Ghosts of an Antiquary.

And I thought that it might be kind of nice to read one of those stories.

And the one I picked is a particular favorite of mine.

So, this one's a little bit longer.
