Summary

A Grateful, Giving, Happy Heart - Gratitude is like breathing in – letting ourselves be touched by the goodness in others and in our world. Generosity is like breathing out – sensing our mutual belonging and offering our care. When we are awake and whole, breathing in and out happens naturally. But these beautiful expressions of our heart become blocked when we are dominated by the fear and grasping of our survival brain. This talk explores how we can facilitate the evolution of consciousness with the deliberate cultivation of generosity, and ends with a guided meditation on gratitude and generosity.

0:34.6	So it's November 23rd and to those of you in the United States who celebrate a happy
0:40.5	Thanksgiving.
0:42.6	And I realized I've given a Thanksgiving talk most every year since I started giving
0:47.9	and recording talks decades ago.
0:50.8	And the reason I do so so regularly is that the practices of generosity, of giving and
1:00.3	the practices of gratitude truly bring forward the best of who we are.
1:06.8	They actually express our true nature of love, of awareness.
1:13.5	There's a classic tale of two brothers working together on a family farm.
1:19.6	Once married he has a large family and the other single.
1:22.6	And at the end of the day they just share everything equally.
1:26.4	But one day the single one said to himself, you know, it's not fair to share.
1:31.5	I'm alone and my needs are simple.
1:33.5	And so each night he'd take a sack of grain from his bin and creep across the field between
1:38.9	the houses and dump it into his brothers.
1:42.7	Meanwhile the married brothers thinking to himself, you know, it's not fair to share
1:47.2	equally.
1:48.2	I'm married.
1:49.2	I have a wife and children to look after me in the years to come.
