chief correspondent Clive Myrie, recently back from the USA where he was covering the presidential

election. In the past, as a foreign correspondent, Clive's been based in Tokyo, Los Angeles,

Johannesburg, Singapore, Washington, Paris and Brussels.

Here with him is Boyd Tonkin, erstwhile literary editor of the Independent.

Boyd currently writes for, among others, the New York Review of Books, the Economist and the Financial Times,

and is the author of a reader's guide to global fiction called The 100 Best Novels in Translation.

Clive, Clive Marie, would you start us off with your choice of a good read, please?

Yes, I've chosen the book, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

It's a novel that I found myself drawn to during the summer lockdown.

I'd watched the black and white Henry Fonda film, I suspect many people have, of the book years ago. And it seemed appropriate

in this time of coronavirus, with projections of millions being thrown out of work around the

world and so on because of the pandemic. And it's because the book is set during the Great Depression of the 1930s,

and it chronicles the experience of the Jod family,

who've fallen on hard times.

Droughts helped create the dust bowl that devastates their small holding.
