Summary

The readings for the Second Sunday of Lent brought to mind my good friend Bishop David O’Connell, who was killed last month. He was one of the most Christ-like people I have ever known—a man of deep spiritual conviction, with a profound sense of the power of the Holy Spirit. Like Abraham, he followed the Lord’s call from his homeland of Ireland to serve in the United States, working among the poor and with members of gangs. He called those he served to a deep life of prayer and spiritual transformation in Christ, a mystery revealed in the Gospel account of the Transfiguration.

0:47.3	then the marvelous account of the transfiguration. You know I had a
0:51.4	homily more or less prepared on these themes but as I record these words it's
0:57.5	just been a couple of weeks since the very tragic death of a very dear friend of
1:01.4	mine Bishop Dave O'Connell. I don't know if you've been following that story but
1:05.0	Bishop Dave was shot to death in Los Angeles. I received the news that he had
1:11.0	died which was shocking enough and then the next morning the further
1:15.8	clarification that he had been shot to death and I've just been you know
1:20.6	reeling from that news as everyone who knew him and loved him has but I've just
1:25.4	been reflecting a lot about him in his life and I must say as I was preparing
1:29.9	this sermon and going over these themes he just came back to me again and again.
1:36.2	He was one of the most Christ-like people I've ever known. I don't say that
1:41.2	lightly. I've been around for a while. I met a lot of people some very good
