For decades, countries, institutions, businesses and individuals have been finding ways to offset their carbon emissions,

the main driver of climate change. One of the most popular offsetting schemes is planting trees

in exchange for carbon credits, taking place at sites like this one in Scotland.

We planted more trees last year than the whole of Northern Ireland and Wales combined as a company.

But carbon offsets have been criticised by some climate scientists

who argue they don't reduce the amount of emissions being generated.

We do not think that it's what we call a free pass

for countries or companies to continue emitting

and to then use carbon credits as a way out for themselves.

And some critics say international rules on carbon are far too complicated.

But new, clearer regulation could be about to increase demand for carbon credits between nations

and create more business opportunities.

We have delivered a tough standard. I fully admit that, and it was a strategic choice.

Will countries use it?

That is an open question.

So, is the carbon market at a pivotal point in the push towards net zero?

Or is this a false start?
