It's my great honor today to speak on the floor for the first time as a United States Senator.

I'm here to work hard and do this job and I'll work with anyone who offers common

sense solutions on how to best move this country forward.

Now as my time here comes to an end, I want you to know that my belief in the potential

of this institution and each and every one of you that represented remains as strong as ever.

That was the first Senate speech on the floor, February 2011 and the final Senate speech,

December 3rd, 2024.

Joining us now for one of his final interviews, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia,

he'll retire the Senate at the end of his second term in January,

although elected as a Democrat, he's now an independent. Senator, you hear those two speeches.

What do you think? Well, I want to think that I finished the way I started, trying to bring the place

together. It's what I've always known in my public service life. I couldn't do it by myself.

I didn't think one party had all the answers.

I didn't think the other party was always wrong.

So how do you want to be remembered as you leave this place?

Well, first of all, how you remember by the members you serve with, they know they could

always count on me.

I would never be campaigning against a setting colleague.

I just never would do it.

And they never were afraid, basically, to talk to me, someone they could trust in somebody that basically we did a lot of good working together.
