Over the weekend, my neighbor came to my 13-year-old and told him they had about 130 bales of hay that needed to be loaded. He told my boy he'd pay him $250 and it would take somewhere around 3 hours.
Jax agreed and off he went.
I knew I had to help him because he's never done anything like that on his own, so as it goes, I end up doing about 50% of the work.
No problem.
That's how I am.
I don't have the patience to be waiting around on people.
We get into hour 6 of our 3 hour job and Jax says, "Dad, let's just finish the rest tomorrow."
I told him I was tired, too, but that we probably just needed to finish what we started.
This is the critical point for most people doing anything in life.....
They get to the hard and tiresome part and quit.
But here's the secret no one will tell you.....
If you're tired, you're only 40% of the way there.
In those moments, that's when you are tested to see if you'll show up and keep your word.
Do the work despite being tired.
Sweaty.
Uninspired.
When we were headed back to the house, Jax looked at me and said, "Dad, I'm glad we got that done. That was a great lesson."
I hope you take it as a good lesson for yourself, too.
Growth is in the hard work.
But you won't grow if you don't power through the tough parts and make it go!

I ended up having to do 50% of the work at least because I could just load faster than jacks. and I didn't have the patience to wait around on them because I had to drive the hate trailer. |

1:07.6 | down that they gave us the fucking tractor wasn't really big enough for this job, but we made it all work. But about six hours into it, we had about 30 bales of hay left, and we can take loads of 10, so that meant we have about another hour and a half or so left in the job. And Jack says, man, it's almost dark. Let's come back tomorrow and finish this. And I was tired as hell. |
1:24.9 | And my back hurts because tractors don't have suspension. And I didn't want to fucking bail. Hey, had I known that I was going to be a part of the process, I wouldn't have fucking allowed my son to take that job. But I was already committed. I'd given somebody my word. My son had told him the job would be done. And it was getting late and we retired. it was about 8 o'clock. |
1:26.7 | And he said, let's finish in the morning. |
2:18.5 | And I said, son, I want to finish in the morning too, but we're going to finish tonight. Because the superpower will unlock inside of you once you start seeing the completion of getting the job done, knowing you don't have to come back to it tomorrow, knowing that it's over, done, finished. We got another hour and a half. This is going to take us getting all started and getting in the mood and getting into the zone and getting into all that shit tomorrow. We can knock it out in an hour and a half right now. Get the fuck back on the tractor, stack the hay, and let's get it knocked out. We got to see it through, my boy. |
2:24.2 | Jackson looked at me and said, I hate to say it, but you're right, old man. That lesson right there between me and my 13-year-old son will stick with him the rest of his life. Both of us wanted |

And at the end of the day, and the defender ride back to the ranch house, Jacks looks over me and he says, we actually got pretty good at that next time it won't take as long, because we got to do it again in two months. He also said we got to the house, |
