Summary

Is density dependence operating on wild turkeys? Dr. Bret Collier walks us through his point of view on density dependence and whether it is responsible for observed changes in turkey populations. We cover a lot of ground and discuss various aspects of wild turkey biology from many studies and regions.

So we're here today with Dr. Brett Collier.

0:56.5

He's a professor at Louisiana State University.

0:59.7

Does a lot of work specifically focused on wild turkeys, not only the eastern subspecies,

1:06.2

but has also done quite a bit of work with Rios as well.

1:09.0

Brett, thanks for coming on today.

1:10.0

Glad to be here today. Yeah, really happy to have you. And so, you know, the reason we wanted

1:14.2

to have you on, Brett, as we were talking about just a moment ago, is that there's been a lot of

1:18.9

discussion recently about density dependence and turkeys. And we've had some other guests that we've

1:24.8

talked to that have noted that at a statewide scale or even if you look at region wide scale, there are these patterns that emerge where it looks like, you know, during early restocking or shortly thereafter, these populations experienced a period of rapid growth. And then, you know, they're now a lot of them, at least, are stabilizing or decreasing to an extent.

1:46.1

Looks like somewhat of a typical density-dependent relationship.

1:49.9

And I know you were also a co-author on a paper several years ago with Mike Chamberlain and

1:55.6

Mike Byrne that talked a little bit about that topic.

1:59.3

Yes. Yes. Yes, yes.

2:10.3

So thinking back to kind of historic restoration, you know, we went from a situation where there weren't turkeys on the landscape.

2:12.8

They just weren't there.
