The thing about people disappearing is that the eventual outcomes vary so much from case to case.

Sometimes the people are found and how they went missing is pretty plain, but other times the people are found and something horrible happened to them.

Sometimes they didn't choose to disappear and they were taken by someone with bad intentions.

In late 2005, Phyllis Bloom and her 29-year-old daughter, Heather, traveled from Brooklyn, New York, to visit Heather's sister in Berkeley, California. Heather wasn't like other women her age, she was born with Down syndrome. While the capabilities of a person with Down syndrome vary greatly from one case to another,

most adults with the condition have mental capabilities comparable to an eight or nine-year-old.

Some people born with a condition can live almost entirely on their own, while others need almost 24-hour care.

In Heather's case, she was very dependent on her mother to help her live her life.

She was also born without a thyroid gland, which is a critical component of the endocrine system.

On top of that, she also suffered from heart problems, which is another common problem faced by individuals born with Down syndrome.

In addition to all those other issues, signs were also pointing toward the possibility of her requiring a wheelchair at some point in the future.

All this is to say that Heather really needed her mother to help take care of her.

It's not exactly clear why Phyllis took Heather to California to visit her sister, but it seems like it may have been to visit her for her birthday, which was in early October. At some point during this visit, Phyllis and her other

daughter, Sherry, started to discuss something that quickly turned into an argument. That

argument eventually escalated into a heated altercation, with both of them yelling and screaming

to the point that the neighbors called the Berkeley Police Department. Police would end up leaving

without arresting either of the women because they were able to de-escalate it without it turning physical,
