Gavin Smith, born December 10, 1954, grew up in the San Fernando Valley, and upon entering Van Nuys High School, cemented quite the reputation as the star player of the boys' basketball team.

So much so that he was named a second team All-American by Parade Magazine in 1973 when he was just a senior.

His skills on the basketball courts caught the eye of a handful of coaches.

But after graduating high school, Gavin made the decision to attend and play at the

University of California at Los Angeles under the guidance of coach John Wooden. During his sophomore

year, he helped lead the team to the NCAA championship. He played in almost every game,

appeared twice in the 1976 Final Four, and scored point upon point against even the toughest teams.

After that season, Gavin transferred to Hawaii and finished his successful basketball career on the islands.

Recognized for his long hair and bandana, and always bringing his dog to practice, his coach would later say that he was, quote,

probably one of the best shooters in the history of Hawaii.

Around this time, Gavin served to dip his toe in the film industry.

First, in front of the camera, making his acting debut as a bodyguard in a televised adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Glitz, and after playing a bartender in the 1994 biopic about basketball player Ty Cobb, he decided to switch things up and head on over to the business side of Hollywood.
