There been rumblings of this, but now the legal machinery is ramping up.

The Justice Department is considering asking a judge to break up alphabet Google in the name of competition.

I'm David Brancatrio in New York.

This summer a federal judge had found that Google had built an illegal monopoly and online

search. Now as a remedy the government says it may seek from the same judge

structural changes to that business, Marketplace's Nova Safo reports.

In a court filing, the Justice Department said it may seek structural changes to Google's business.

Google appeared to interpret that as splitting off its chrome browser or Android operating system.

This is the opening salvo in what will surely be a years long battle.
