Summary

Jerry Jenkins is the best-selling author of the Left Behind series and more than 200 other books. In this conversation with host Warren Smith, he talks about his career, his writing process, and his manual for writers, Writing For The Soul. He also talks about his seemingly unlikely friendship with Stephen King, and what it's like being Dallas Jenkins' dad.

Support for Listening In comes from Samaritan Ministries, a community of Christians who care for one another spiritually and financially when a medical need arises.

Patrick and Melody liked the idea of a group of people coming together to share medical costs, and joined Samaritan Ministries in 2017. When they welcomed twin daughters, fellow members sent money directly to them to help them pay their medical bills. When the body of Christ comes together, burdens are lifted, and God is glorified. This applies to all areas of life, including health care. More at samaritanministries.org/worldpodcast.

A broken bone, cancer, pregnancy, medical emergency…we all know how quickly a health care need can arise. That’s where Samaritan Ministries comes in. There are no network restrictions; you choose the doctors and treatments that are best for you. After care is received, medical bills are sent to Samaritan Ministries, and they notify members to pray and send money directly to you to help you pay your medical bills. New members are welcome anytime of the year. More at samaritanministries.org/worldpodcast.

I'm Warren Smith, and today you'll be listening in on my conversation with the man who may be the best-selling author of Christian books in history, Jerry Jenkins.

0:12.1

He shares some of his writing secrets in a new book called Writing for the Soul.

0:19.6

For me, writing is obedience. I'm following a call to full-time

0:24.8

pressure work. So once I've written the book, I've obeyed. The best-selling part of it or the

0:30.8

big royalties or the reviews and all that, I don't have any control over that anyway. That's up to the

0:36.0

marketplace. And so my goal is not all those earthly things.

0:41.5

My goal is, to me, success is obedience.

0:45.5

You might think that Jerry Jenkins needs no introduction to the evangelical world.

0:50.6

After all, his name has appeared on the cover of more than 200 books, books that have

0:57.0

sold more than 72 million copies. The left behind books, which he wrote with Dr. Tim LaHaye,

1:05.5

became a global phenomenon. 21 of his books have been on the New York Times bestseller list, with seven of them

1:13.8

debuting at number one. But Jerry Jenkins was no overnight success. He was an avid sports fan in

1:23.0

his youth. In fact, he covered high school sports for his local paper while he was still in high school himself.

1:30.4

He labored in newsrooms in an era when they were noisy with the clackety-clack of typewriters

1:37.1

and the profanity and cigarette smoke of hard-charging reporters on deadline.

1:43.8

Those early experiences gave him the discipline to write crisp punchy prose, a discipline

1:51.4

that has served him well throughout his career.

1:54.9

Jenkins has also had an interesting career away from the typewriter.

1:59.5

For example, he's developed a friendship with horror writer Stephen King, which we talk about

2:04.8

in our interview today.

2:06.3

He has had executive positions at Moody Bible Institute.

2:10.4

He's collaborated with his son, Dallas Jenkins, on a successful movie and on TV projects.
