Summary

Chuck Marohn believes we should design cities, towns, roads, neighborhoods, and highways as if people mattered, and not based on short-term economic efficiency. In this conversation with host Warren Smith, Marohn explains the research and reasoning behind his conclusions.

Support for Listening In comes from Samaritan Ministries, a community of Christians who care for one another spiritually and financially when a medical need arises.

Patrick and Melody liked the idea of a group of people coming together to share medical costs, and joined Samaritan Ministries in 2017. When they welcomed twin daughters, fellow members sent money directly to them to help them pay their medical bills. When the body of Christ comes together, burdens are lifted, and God is glorified. This applies to all areas of life, including health care. More at samaritanministries.org/worldpodcast.

A broken bone, cancer, pregnancy, medical emergency…we all know how quickly a health care need can arise. That’s where Samaritan Ministries comes in. There are no network restrictions; you choose the doctors and treatments that are best for you. After care is received, medical bills are sent to Samaritan Ministries, and they notify members to pray and send money directly to you to help you pay your medical bills. New members are welcome anytime of the year.

I'm Warren Smith, and today you'll be listening in on my conversation with the founder of the

0:06.6

Strong Towns Movement, Chuck Moran. I started to recognize that cities are, in essence, human habitat.

0:16.2

They are the place where humans live. And when they're optimized to the human experience,

0:24.4

when they are optimized to the human, they perform a lot of functions really well. And when

0:30.2

they're optimized around other things, the automobile, GDP growth, you know, name your

0:36.7

external parameter, they function more like machines that

0:40.8

actually tend to grind up human prosperity as opposed to to create its flourishing.

0:49.0

Chuck Morone has become a disruptive and, to my way of thinking, positive force in the world of urban planning.

0:57.0

He believes that we should be designing cities, towns, roads, highways, and neighborhoods as if people mattered and not just short-term economic efficiency.

1:08.9

Motivated by the Christian idea that humans have inherent dignity and carefully argued with

1:16.5

facts, data, and the precision of an engineer, which he is, Chuck Moron has created a movement

1:23.1

of like-minded people, and that movement now includes elected officials and policymakers who believe that we humans

1:30.7

flourish not as isolated creatures behind gated community walls, but as members interacting in a community.

1:43.1

He is challenging some long-held idols of the urban planning world.

1:48.3

He believes, for example, that the number of highway deaths in this country, about 40,000 per year, is not just unfortunate, or perhaps the cost of doing business, economic efficiency and all of that, but rather a preventable

2:04.1

tragedy with a massive human cost and outrage and that traffic engineers who design roads for

2:12.8

speeds have a moral and perhaps even a legal liability for these deaths.

2:20.5

Morone started Strong Towns as a blog back in 2008.

2:25.3

It has since grown to include a podcast, and he's written at least six books, and his ideas

2:30.9

are now making an impact on mayors and urban planners around the country.

2:35.7

His latest book is Confessions of a Recovering Engineer, Transportation for a Strong Town. Support for listening in comes from Samaritan Ministries,
