Summary

When my son was about five-years-old he repeatedly urged me to say no to “rugs.” I was perplexed at his stance against floor coverings until I realized he was referring to drugs. Apparently he misunderstood a well-intentioned friends' advice on avoiding drug use—and it still makes me laugh today. But I digress.

This week is red-ribbon week in public schools and the perfect time for us to talk about the tough subject of drugs and addiction in our kids. Richard Capriola has great wisdom in this area from his work as a mental health and addiction counselor the last two decades, most recently at the Menninger Clinic in Houston.

Here are some of the important topics we cover in today’s show:

  • The drug(s) of choice for our teens today
  • Signs of drugs and alcohol use in our kids
  • What to do if you suspect drug/alcohol use in your child
  • The difference in clinical addictions and process addictions
  • Warning signs of self-harm
  • Treatment options
  • Encouragement for parents who are walking through addiction with their kids

Please take time to listen to this important topic. If you’re like me, you may feel like it’s not relevant to your kids today or even that it’s a heavy subject you would rather avoid. But we don’t know what we don’t know about the future and who may need us to be knowledgeable in this area. So let’s do it together.

Each week we have honest discussions about the ups and downs of parenting and the lessons God is teaching us along the way. It's real, it's fun, and it's biblical. Life is messy. Don't walk

the parenting road alone. Hey guys, welcome to Pardon the Mess. I'm glad you're here. This

0:34.7

week we are talking about addiction in our kids. And let me be the first

0:38.8

to say there ain't a one of us that really wants to think about that and talk about addiction.

0:43.4

But it is so important and so necessary. And so just thank you for tuning in as we talk about

0:49.0

this important topic. And we're doing it because it's Red Ribbon Week this week. And so

0:53.1

if you have kids in public school in particular, they do Red Ribbon Week.

0:56.8

And so here's my moderately funny Red Ribbon story of when my first child.

1:01.5

Now, mind you, it's first child, right?

1:03.1

And so maybe y'all are, maybe you aren't with your first children.

1:05.7

You tend to be kind of hypersensitive about things.

And so she was going to the local public school.

1:10.5

And she was five in

1:11.8

kindergarten. And she came home, you know, a month or two in around October with, um, her bracelet on for

1:17.9

red ribbon week that they had given her. And it said say no to drugs. And I was so outraged. I literally was

1:23.0

calling my friends. I'm like, what in the world? I've spent five years protecting this child and I sent her to

1:27.5

school for six weeks and they're talking about drugs. And now I look back. I'm like, sister, that is a little

1:33.4

too much gas. We need some more breaks. Slow it down because drugs, it's a real issue. And, you know,

1:39.5

starting to talk about it early is not a bad thing. So there you have it. That was my red ribbon outrage when

1:44.8

my first went through. And I'm glad we're talking about it now because it's so important.
