On September 1st, 2002, Tommy Ratu called the police in Salem, Arkansas, and reported two

people missing. His four-year-old son, Thomas Michael Mikey Ratu, and the boy's mother, Angela Mack Cox.

According what he told then police chief Albert Rourke, the pair left in a late model dark gray or blue Chevrolet or GMC extended cab pickup with Missouri license plate.

Interviewing friends and loved ones, investigators soon learned that Angela had been married

to a man named James Cox in April 2002.

And the following month, the pair were involved in a very serious near-fatal car accident

that sent both of them to the hospital.

James claimed that his brother Jeremy picked Angela up and took her and her son to Alton, Missouri. Then in the fall of 2002, Angela left

Mikey in the care of a couple in Missouri, Clarence and Barbara Cruces, who, when asked,

claimed they were planning on adopting the boy.

However, there were some reports that claimed Angela sold her son to the couple.

After leaving Mikey behind, Angela then traveled to Chowchilla, California, and spent some time there.

Speaking with her mother in December of 2002, she told her she was going back to Missouri to get Mikey, and according to Thomas, the boy's father, Angela called him from California
