And I'd like to thank all the Dominicans

for their kind hospitality, kind invitation to this conference.

It's a great pleasure and honor for me to be here with you.

And as Father Dominic mentioned, I know that I owe this invitation

to this little book published in 2014,

the servant and the latter, cooperation with evil in the 21st century.

And the text was essentially completed in 2009, as my dissertation at the Pentechal regina

Apostolorum University in Rome.

And in this intervening nearly decade,

I've had various opportunities to present my understanding of the matter

and to try to clarify more precisely, also for myself,

the key issue at stake as I see it. So in this talk, after briefly

summarizing what I sought to do in the book, I'll draw out some of the elements which concern

the specific question of intention, hence the title of the presentation, a closer look at intention,

what exactly is the cooperator doing.

And finally, since I certainly didn't claim to have resolved all the various problems that

seem to open up, I'll try to indicate some additional steps forward beyond what I already

ventured in the book. As we know, since the days of St. Alphonse's Lagoury, Catholic theology has made a fundamental

distinction in the analysis of cooperation with evil between formal and material cooperation.

The formal cooperator shares the bad intention of the principal agent while the material cooperator does not.

This latter would merely foresee that his cooperation will serve the principal agent in some way,
