We can now join Caroline Wyatt with the Coalition troops in Northern Kuwait.

Caroline we saw a surrendering Iraqi forces there you have more on that

tonight. Well what we've been hearing is that the surrenders now number in the

higher hundreds so probably 20 years ago I was one of the BBC correspondents

embedded with British troops waiting to go into Iraq from Northern Kuwait as

the Americans and their allies prepared to invade. That intervention was meant

to be light quick and bring liberation. Instead it brought this. These were

uniquely horrific attacks even by current Iraqis. As rescues struggled more

bombs were going off one after another across Baghdad. It was relentless. The

streets were drowning in smoke and sirens. The targets snobbed coalition forces

politicians or UN personnel but ordinary Iraqis. In the aftermath the

lesson seemed clear but then came the Syrian civil war. I've seen many devastated

areas in Syria but I've never ever seen one like this. America withdrew the

last of its troops from Afghanistan. There is panic and fear everywhere. Russia invaded

Ukraine. These international dilemmas have no easy painless solution, intervene and

risk failure or fail to intervene and risk even more civilian suffering. So 20

years on I want to rediscover the ideas that shaped the decision to invade Iraq

and drive its dictators that am Hussein from power and to trace the impact on how

the West thinks about humanitarian military intervention now. I'm Caroline
