Summary

The College Admission scandal showed everyone the lengths some parents will go to in order to further their children. While Parents in those cases used to access and money to steal opportunities for their children other parents have found different ways to try to do something similar. Both stories I cover in this episode are pending criminal prosecution as of 3-24-21. First, a Pennsylvania cheer mom used technology to create ‘deep fake’ videos and images of teens on her daughter’s cheer squad in a seeming attempt to discredit those teens by showing that they were engaging in behavior that goes against the teams’ honor code. The Victory Vipers are an elite cheer team in Doylestown Pa. Law enforcement said that the woman used apps on her phone to alter photos and videos of three teens, then masked her cell phone number to send those to coaches on the team and teens themselves. The District Attorney of Bucks County charged the 50-year-old mom with 3 counts of cyber harassment of a child and 3 counts of harassment, both misdemeanors. Second, a Flordia Elementary School Assistant Principal and her teen daughter were arrested for allegedly using the mother’s access to school accounts to change over 100 votes in the Homecoming election. It’s alleged that they accessed the school’s system to changes votes from a singular IP address. They have been charged with one count each of offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks, and electronic devices, a third-degree felony; unlawful use of a two-way communications device, a third-degree felony; criminal use of personally identifiable information, a third-degree felony; and conspiracy to commit these offenses, which is a first-degree misdemeanor.

Well, I was tempted to call this episode Mom's Gone Wild, but I thought it would maybe attract

0:07.4

the wrong kind of attention to a topic that though I laugh is actually very serious. So today,

0:15.3

we are talking about two stories of moms who have gone way over the edge, who have crossed the

0:24.2

line when it comes to their daughters. Now, this is adjacent, in my mind, to something like

0:34.5

the College Admissions scandal. These are the little things you see happening before you get to

0:39.6

something massive like the College Admissions scandal. But there are these two stories that are

0:46.0

very compelling to me and both of them involve technology and you know a girl loves her tech.

So we're going to talk about two mothers who are now facing criminal prosecution, one for

trying to advance her daughter's cheerleading career, one for rigging an election, for homecoming

queen. And it's fascinating, it's sad, it's just parenting on wild and it's deeply concerning to

1:20.4

me that this is something that we are going to have to continue to deal with with the technological

1:26.2

advancements. And I think the College Admissions scandal really shines a light on how far people

1:32.9

will go for their children and how broken the adults are in our society where they cannot let

1:39.7

their kids stand on their own and succeed or sometimes fail and learn and do better next time.

1:50.4

But that's a lot to talk about, so we need to just get into it.
