All right, everybody, welcome back to a championship edition of The Teardown.

I'm also my co-worker Jordan Bianchi.

We are motorsport writers for The Athletic, and we're here at Phoenix Raceway.

But Jordan, it's, of course, you know, not the normal championship day because it's just sort of been a pall over

the track today as we arrive and, you know, you and I read the tweet up and then all of a sudden

we get the news of Coy Gibbs' sudden shocking death just, I mean, 24 hours ago in this very media center, he was on stage

for a press conference. He was doing pictures on the track with his son after Tide Triumph, after a tumultuous

week. And, you know, then just suddenly, you know, he passed away and asleep, and it's just tough for everybody to process.

It was tough to even focus on the race today, you know, before the race, you even starting out, like, just like, how do you even, how do you even, it was, it was just, the whole thing's just been a weird day to me. Yeah, I mean, it was not a pre-race at all. It didn't feel like a pre-race. It was, we're covering this new story and did this big, like you said, a poll

kind of over this. And I just kept thinking about how the night before, they had this great

moment, Koi and Thai. You know, Thai, after a really tough week, had all these arrows slung at him. I mean, deservedly so. I mean, what he did at Martin's

deserved all the criticism there. And I kept thinking about how Koi was defending him and said,

that's my son, you know, and at the end of the day, he's my son and I love him, right? And all of

these things. And they had this great moment after a great race where tie really showed like that's the best race he ever drove he's smart

he was patient he could have shoved guys out of the way he didn't he he did it the way he needed the way

he did it the right way and he comes through and he wins a championship and it's like wow that's cool you know

they for a rough week they had this they're celebrating now and then the next morning it's just gone it's

like i don't know how you i can't wrap my hand around that i mean and just the level of tragedy

for this family um you know they they jd gibbs dies in in 2019 which was absolutely tragic at age

49 coy gibbs now also age 49. Coy Gibbs now, also age 49, passes away.

Those were only, those were only, the only two children of Joe Gibbs and his wife, Pat.
