Summary

This is a supplemental episode of the Tudors Dynasty Podcast and is guest hosted by author Adrienne Dillard.

Adrienne has written two books, the first was Cor Rotto - a novel of Catherine Carey and the second was The Raven's Widow - a novel of Jane Boleyn. Adrienne's research has placed her at the top of people who know the most about Catherine Carey and that is why I asked her to be a guest host today.

About Adrienne:

Adrienne Dillard, is a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with emphasis in History from Montana State University-Northern. She has been an eager student of history for most of her life and has completed in-depth research on the American Revolutionary War time period in American History and the history and sinking of the Titanic. Her senior university capstone paper was on the discrepancies in passenger lists on the ill-fated liner and Adrienne was able to work with Encyclopedia Titanica for much of her research on that subject. Her previous works include best-selling novel,"Cor Rotto: A Novel of Catherine Carey" and "Catherine Carey in a Nutshell" for MadeGlobal's History in a Nutshell series. Her most recent novel, The Raven's Widow: A Novel of Jane Boleyn was released in February 2017. When she isn't writing, Adrienne works as an administrative assistant in the financial services industry and enjoys spending time with her husband, Kyle, and son, Logan, at their home in the Pacific Northwest.

And our host for today to tell us all about Catherine Carey is author Adrian Dillard.

I know normally I do all the talking or we do questions and answers, but today I'm going to let

Adrian do all the talking and tell you about a character that she knows a whole lot more about than I do.

And with that, here's Adrian in a brief history of Catherine Carey.

1:00.3

Though it is fairly easy to pinpoint the moment Catherine Carey departed this fair world,

1:05.7

it's much more difficult to determine just when and how she came into it.

1:10.6

As with most tutor births, at least until the

1:13.4

reign of the first Elizabeth, Catherine's was never officially recorded. Based upon her entrance to

1:19.8

the English court in 1539, we can say with confidence that she was at least born before 1524,

1:27.4

as the minimum age for service in the royal

household was 16. There are some exceptions, of course, but these were very rare. Another indication

1:36.2

comes from Catherine's husband, Francis Knowles. Thanks to his dutiful annotations in a Latin

dictionary now housed at the Bodleyian Library, we know not only

the dates of their children's births, but the date that the two were married, April 26, 1540.

1:52.7

This was a marriage in the fullest sense, with their first child coming the very next Easter.

1:57.9

Because we don't know Catherine's exact date of birth, debate continues to rage over her

paternity. While both Catherine and her brother were given the surname of their mother's legal

husband, William Carey, there is a possibility that one or both of them could have been conceived
