As a member of Donald Trump's National Security Council, Fiona Hill was a key figure,

coordinating policy toward Vladimir Putin's Russia.

As such, she had a bird's eye view of a strange dynamic they played out throughout the Trump

years, the repeated and seemingly inexplicable sympathy that the US President had for the

authoritarian Russian leader, culminating in a disastrous press conference in Helsinki

during which Trump made clear that when it came to Russian interference in the 2016 election,

he believed Putin over the unanimous conclusions of US intelligence agencies.

For Hill, it was a low point.

Prompting her, she writes in her new book, There is nothing for you here, to consider

faking a seizure and hurling herself back into a row of journalists in order to stop

the humiliating spectacle.

But was this evidence that Trump was being controlled by Moscow because they had compromised

on him?

Or was this a more revealing glimpse into the psyche of a US President who envied Putin

for his wealth, his power, and his ability to run Russia as he sees fit?
