| 0:00.0 | This is Bird Note. It's a September day in Ontario right at dusk and a small |
| 0:07.2 | flock of songbirds flies out from the treetops into the cool evening air. The |
| 0:12.0 | flock rises higher and higher and then begins heading south. It's the start of |
| 0:16.7 | their fall migration. Among this mix of thrushes and orals is a chunky brownish |
| 0:23.1 | bird, a woodthrush. This particular woodthrush has finished nesting in this |
| 0:29.8 | southern Canadian woodland. Now it will migrate 2300 miles south to spend the |
| 0:36.2 | winter in Costa Rica. Before migrating it ate steadily for two weeks |
| 0:42.1 | putting on fat to fuel the flight. Woodthrushes migrate in great |
| 0:46.6 | bursts. In a single night our thrush will climb to several thousand feet |
| 0:51.5 | and cover two or even three hundred miles before morning. |
| 0:56.4 | Then it's time to recharge. This woodthrush might pause in the Florida pan |
| 1:01.8 | handle for 10 days before embarking at dusk on a non-stop flight across the |
| 1:07.4 | Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatan. In early April woodthrushes begin flying |
| 1:13.4 | north again but unlike the leisurely pace of fall springbirds are in a hurry |
| 1:19.3 | to migrate. They'll get back to Ontario three times as fast as they got to |
| 1:24.8 | Costa Rica. For bird note I'm Michael Stein. |
