Summary

Oh yeah, Buckeye Talk is really going back to 1930. On this Friday episode, it’s the first Buckeye ReTalkable in some time, as Buckeye Talk on occasion likes to rewatch and relive Ohio State football games of the past. But a game has never been this old before. Doug Lesmerises and Nathan Baird on this episode break down the 1930 Ohio State-Michigan game, which was played in mid-October in Columbus and won by the Wolverines 13-0. There are some stars of the era in this game, including Wes Fesler, the OSU All-American and future head coach. Also worth watching is Michigan quarterback Harry Newman, a three-year star for the Wolverines who might have won a Heisman Trophy if the award had existed then. The Heisman didn't debut until 1935. There's also discussion about Ohio Stadium's history, and how close Notre Dame legend Knute Rockne came to coaching the Buckeyes. This is different for sure, but we hope you enjoy this old-timey style of Buckeye Talk. Thanks for listening. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hey, hey, where you been, but got to talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:26.6

Welcome back to another Buckeye talk. It's a Buckeye retalkable. And Nathan, this is definitely the weirdest one. It's not even in dispute and it's not even I don't even know what this is going to be like.

0:39.0

It's from 1930. It is the Ohio State Michigan game from 1930 and Nathan, we are not doing this because it is a particularly extraordinary moment in the Ohio State Michigan rivalry. It is not a particularly extraordinary game.

0:56.6

But the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library, which is a really good resource. Michigan actually does a really good job with the Ohio State Michigan series and the rivalry stuff I've been on the Bentley Historical Library site many times over the years.

1:11.6

Ohio State has a great archives as well. They're putting on a lot of really good stuff in the Ohio State archives for the 100 year anniversary of Ohio Stadium.

1:19.6

So I would if you like this stuff at all, especially as you get maybe if you get a little time off in the spring or summer and you can dig in.

1:27.6

You can find some stuff online. I know, you know, back in the old days, you should go to stuff. This is this is just on the Michigan the Bentley Historical Library website last year. They announced that they put out a bunch of old Michigan games.

1:43.6

And Ohio State games were among them, Nathan. This is the oldest Ohio State Michigan game as far as I know that they made available. It's from 1930.

1:54.6

To be honest, I haven't quadruple checked the Ohio State archives in terms of what video they may have of old games. I'll put that on my list of things to do this summer.

2:02.6

But that's why we're doing it. We're doing Ohio State Michigan 1930 because it's the oldest Ohio State Michigan game we know of at the moment that has video.

2:10.6

It's a 20 minute video clip that we got to watch video. No audio. No audio. So if you don't do a little bit of research going in, you might not know which team is which.

2:21.6

Correct. Well, it says at the bottom, so Michigan does not have numbers on it.

2:28.6

I think they do. I think they're super super faint.

2:31.6

Are they dark? Cause the one problem is they're both wearing dark uniforms. Right. There's nobody's wearing a white jersey top.

2:39.6

So at the beginning of the game, it's like, who is who? And on the library historical site to its credit, it has a little note, OSU has white numerals on jerseys.

2:49.6

So that really helped. That's under the clip. It's like, okay, well, at least now we know which team is which.

2:54.6

And then you can see the Ohio State numbers. So you can see who was who for Ohio State. I could not tell who was who for Michigan.

3:01.6

Maybe if there are dark numbers on dark jerseys, so be it. I couldn't see them.

3:05.6

I think they were, I think maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I thought they were really faint numbers, but no, it's, we've talked before about the retocables being sort of having kind of a time machine effect.

3:18.6

And how weird it feels to watch recent past. And when I said recent past, I mean, like, you know, even 80s, 90s, where it's like, oh, that's like so close to like the sport that we know, it's just a little bit off.

3:33.6

Like, is there something? It's just funky enough. This is like a different sport. This is not that. So it's a hard watch, right? Like it's hard to figure out what is going on.

3:46.6

And I think it is made more difficult by the fact that nobody scores for a while.
