Hi Dr. Mona, my name is Julie and my question for you is I have a 11 and a half month old

0:25.9

and she has a new found obsession it seems like of trying to gag herself almost and we try to

0:35.9

replace it with a pacifier but then she's also getting to the age where we would like to we

0:40.4

her off of her pacifier but she just loves sticking her fingers as far back into her mouth as

0:46.0

they will go until she's gagging. I wasn't sure if you've seen that before and if you have any

0:50.8

recommendations on kind of how to manage any of that. Thank you. Hi Julie thank you so much for

0:58.5

this question. First off I agree kids do some pretty weird things okay. Gagging is part of them

1:04.7

where you as a parent will say why would you even do that like of course you're gonna gag or maybe

1:09.6

even vomit but gagging is something that they like to do it's a form of self-exploration you know

1:15.5

they want to know well if I put my finger down my throat or put this down my throat what's going to

1:20.0

happen so they look at it as fun and look at it as curiosity right they want to see cause and

1:26.6

effect and they it's just something for them to do. So first look at it as that right that this

1:32.0

is a curiosity thing and cause and effect thing so you can better understand where they are coming

1:36.8

from. My first tip is to ignore the behavior so I want you to not make any facial expressions or

1:44.4

get upset when they are gagging themselves. I know this can be very hard but sometimes when we

1:49.5

react you know we make faces or go no no no they do it more it got them attention so you really

1:55.9

want to make sure that you almost act like you don't care even though you do and you're just

1:59.7

watching to see what they do. If they keep doing it even after ignoring it just say for a few days

2:05.0

I would even try five days of really really every caretaker ignoring it then what you can do is
