They are here celebrating the publication of a debut novel called Songs of No Provenance,

available from Catapult.

It has been long-listed for the Center for Fiction's first novel prize.

Songs of No Provenance is about a musician named Joan Vole,

who is a lifer and an art monster who has spent years developing a cult following and sort of teetering on the edge of fame.

And in the novel, Joan commits a shocking sexual act on stage,

and it upends her life and her career.

And she ends up teaching at a writing camp for teenagers in rural Virginia.

I mean, there's a lot that happens, but that's kind of the architecture of the story.

She flees New York and ends up in the country at this camp for creative teenagers.

Songs of No Provenance is a novel about, among other things, trans non-binary identity, kink, fame hunger, art, secrecy, and survival.

This is a novel that really struck me.

It's unlike anything that I've seen come off the assembly line in memory.

And it took a lot of courage to write it. And we talk about that. I had a great time. in memory.
