What is the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism?

But down here on Earth, what are the differences between Protestantism and Catholicism?

Well, it goes back to Martin Luther, not that Martin Luther.

I'm talking about the fat Augustinian German priest, Martin Luther, who like many in his day

noticed discrepancies and corruption in the Catholic Church in the 16th century.

And instead of reforming the Catholic Church from the inside, Martin Luther wanted to formally change the structure, the theology, the sacraments, the liturgy, and created something entirely new beginning in 1517, which became Lutheranism, but then broken to many other pieces of what we call Protestantism.

So today we'll go through the 10 major theological differences between Catholicism and Protestantism.

The main difference, number one, that's so obvious to people, is the Blessed Virgin Mary.

And I started with this one because it's probably one of the most controversial.

For Catholics, the Blessed Virgin Mary is not only the mother of Jesus Christ, but she's also the mother of every Christian who ever lived.

Catholics take this from the Gospel of John. It's one of the seven last words of Jesus from the cross.

When he says, behold your mother. And Catholics take those words literally.

Whenever Catholics look up at Jesus on the cross, they believe Mary stands next to them as their spiritual mother.

And every single encounter of Jesus Christ, Mary stands next to us and Jesus says, behold your mother.
