Summary

Can you truly build world-class strength while training for an ultra-marathon? For years, the "interference effect" told us that cardio kills gains—but the science says otherwise.

In this definitive solo episode, Cody McBroom breaks down the Hybrid Athlete methodology: a training system designed to make you a more capable, resilient, and high-performing human being.

Cody dives deep into the research, debunking the myth that aerobic work eats away at muscle tissue. Instead, he explains how improving your aerobic capacity actually enhances your ability to build muscle by boosting mitochondrial health, nutrient delivery, and recovery between sets.

Whether you want to look like a bodybuilder but perform like an elite athlete, this episode provides the step-by-step blueprint to fueling, programming, and periodizing your way to a hybrid physique.

- The Science of "Both": Why the interference effect is a myth of improper dosing, not biological incompatibility.

- Mitochondria as Muscle Fuel: How zone 2 training improves oxidative capacity, allowing you to handle more lifting volume.

- The 6-Phase Hybrid Blueprint: From auditing your baseline to managing "stress buckets" and building a weekly split.

- The High-Low Model: Consolidating high-intensity stressors to maximize CNS recovery.

- The "Hybrid Tax": How to calculate your fueling needs and utilize intra-workout carbs to prevent "bonking" without ruining your body composition.

- Injury Prevention: Why unilateral work and posterior chain training are non-negotiable for runners who lift.

This episode of the Choose Hard podcast is going to be your definitive guide for everything hybrid training.

0:06.1

I'm going to give you the step-by-step blueprint to understanding what it means to be a hybrid athlete,

0:11.6

how to blend both endurance and strength training together, how to fuel your body for both energy systems,

0:18.7

and do it all in a way where you avoid injuries and can

0:22.9

improve both your body composition, your strength, as well as your aerobic capabilities. This episode has become like a monstrous guide, a monstrous piece of content.

0:52.9

And I say that because I'm looking at my notes for it.

0:56.0

And what started as just me putting down some bullet points and trying to like link some

1:00.8

research and such just to make sure that I had something to refer back to became two different

1:05.9

documents. So I have like basically a full article already written. Um, I'm going to turn it into a guide. So you're going to be able to have a guide. By the end of this podcast, I'm going to show you where you can find it. But it is so detailed because there was just so much more that I needed to get into as I started taking notes, reflecting on my own experience over the last probably 12 months or so of really pushing the hybrid

1:28.5

training model as well as the research that's out there. And so then I ended up creating a second

1:34.2

document with just what the research shows on some of the topics that I wanted to cover. So

1:38.9

this, again, this is a monster podcast and I'm talking it up, but I think it's going to be a really good one.

1:45.7

And I'm excited to dive into this because hybrid training has become really, I've adopted it personally,

1:51.9

and I've really enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to.

1:54.7

And I think there's so much value in it.

1:57.6

I also think it can be very destructive because it can push your body really hard if you're

2:05.4

not careful about how you program it. But also, it can take people further away from their goals

2:10.5

if they're not very clear on what it is they want. I think a lot of people listen to this podcast,

2:15.5

that's what they want. They want to be healthy. They want to perform well. They want to look good. They want to be strong. They want to be functional. But they want to look athletic and functional tube. This is perfect for you. For the person who is just bodybuilding, it's not perfect for you. For the person who has a very specific sport goal, it's probably not perfect for you. You can blend aspects of it into there. And I think there's going to be a lot of things that I touch on today that you learn that you can apply to basically

2:38.4

any type of training no matter what your goal is. But I think that my goal with this is to really

2:44.0

define what hybrid training is, go over the potential problems and a lot of what has been the issues people find with it

2:53.5

and what the research actually says with those things, things such as concurrent training.
