0:00.0	Why are stories so persuasive?
0:03.7	Well, stories are persuasive because humans thinking stories, our brains remix reality
0:10.1	and turn that reality into a narrative with ourselves at the centre.
0:15.6	So, you know, storytelling is sense-making for the human brain.
0:18.7	We haven't evolved to think in data, algorithm.
0:22.4	We've evolved to process reality in the form of stories. The story is always going to be the most
0:27.5	persuasive, you know, technology out there. Story is also always going to be the thing that
0:32.7	persuades people most of all. Is it kind of ironic that in the modern world a lot of the time we're
0:42.1	told to take great heed of rationality and data and statistics and stuff like that, but you've got
0:50.3	to disregard all of that personification and narrative and archetypes and religion
0:55.4	and mythology, you know, that's sort of, that's very unsophisticated, it doesn't really meet
0:59.8	the criteria by which we judge what's happening in the modern world. So you're asking people to get
1:04.5	rid of the stuff which to them feels most real and is persuasive, which is story and archetype
1:10.1	and mythology and personification
1:11.5	and blah, blah, and to start to believe in the thing, which is the most sterile and novel and
1:18.3	sort of alien to us. Absolutely. And I think there's a huge naivity out there that, you know,
1:24.9	especially in, you know, what you might call our world of, you know,
1:27.6	like to think ourselves as rational people, atheistic people, people who are interested in data
1:31.6	in science. And amongst our people, there's a very naive idea that we are the ones who are
1:38.5	led by data. I mean, I remember earlier in my career as a journalist interviewing a famous
1:42.5	skeptic, Stephen Nevella,
1:48.4	who used to present a podcast called The Skeptics Guide to the Universe.
