If you know anything about the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, you may have heard about his reality distortion field.

This was a term Apple engineer Bud Tribble used in 1981 to describe Jobs' ability to convince himself and others of just about anything through a bewildering mixture of charm, provado, hyperbole, and persistence. By sheer

force of will and personality, Steve Jobs could bend physics, alter time, and distort reality.

It worked for him, even if sometimes it came off as bullying or

exploitative. Steve was a wizard, maybe even a dark wizard, who could conjure up things from the

ether, but some people are immune. Bill Gates thought he was, saying, Jobs would be casting spells

and I would see people mesmerized, but because I'm a minor wizard,

the spells don't work on me. So if we can acknowledge that Steve Jobs was a high wizard

who could cast these spells, and minor wizard Bill Gates could see them and be immune,

what happens when a wizard's apprentice tries to grab the magic wand and distort reality for

himself? That's pretty much the story we're sharing today with an episode from my other podcast

Business Movers. Robert Maxwell was a Czech refugee who fled the Nazis to Britain,

longing for power, wealth, and acceptance. He gained almost all of these things through his own witchy ways,

but he was no Steve Jobs. His magic always seemed to sputter a bit, so Maxwell increasingly relied

on sleight of hand, which doesn't mix well with accounting. So even as Maxwell built himself up

into one of Britain's most wealthy and famous men, the conditions were brewing for an untimely end when he mysteriously disappeared off his luxury yacht in 1991.
