It was my daughter's first time, and she was very excited to see Hamilton live on stage.

She's a budding musical theater aficionado and performer in her own right. Last night,

I watched her on stage in a kid's adaptation of Schoolhouse Rock, perhaps the epitome of Gen X

nostalgia. But when we were watching Hamilton, at the end of Act 1, there's a song called

Non-Stad, which paints the early careers and growing rivalry of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Bird.

And in this song, there's a very quick reference.

Well, the first recorded murder trial,

and it came in 1800 when Levi Weeks was accused of murdering Elma Sands in what came to be known as the Manhattan Well Murder Trial. But this trial wasn't just important for being the first,

or a rare bit of teamwork by Hamilton and Burr. They were co-counsels

for the defense. It was also probably the dawn of America's infatuation with true crime.
