Summary

Air Date: 05/26/2015

Today we take a look at the US death penalty from all angles. Cultural norms? We’re an outlier. Protecting the innocent? We kill innocent people. Following the letter of the law? We’re absolutely breaking the 8th amendment to the Constitution. Fiscal responsibility? The death penalty costs about 3 times more than life imprisonment. And don’t forget about the racially biased implementation and the structurally biased trail system of death penalty cases.

Welcome one and all. I have an excellent episode for you today, but if you missed the announcement,

0:04.3

let me catch you up. I realized recently that I've been working in an unhealthy number of hours.

0:10.4

That had been going on for a while, but really got exacerbated after the election.

0:14.6

There's been an explosion of content that I am trying to sort through and consume, which I think

0:20.0

is making the show better, but is taking me more time. So I'm trying to implement a bunch of policies

0:26.0

that will all work together to create a more sustainable work environment for me and the same

0:32.3

high quality show that you already know and love. So one of the ideas that I'm working with at the

0:36.6

moment is to cut down on the number of episodes per month. It's possible that will only be

0:41.5

temporary. We'll see how all my other strategies work together to cut down on my work hours,

0:46.6

but for the time being, I'm cutting down to six episodes per month instead of eight. So as promised,

0:52.3

there will be two rerun episodes. This is one of those. It is, I will admit, not an uplifting

0:59.1

episode, but a very important topic. So I hope you listen to it. It's from a few years ago,

1:03.5

but it's evergreen and full of great material. So stick around for that. I just have a few quick

1:09.9

comments I want to make before that. First of all, as part of this whole transition strategy,

1:15.3

even though I'm trying to cut down on my total amount of work, I'm also using it as an opportunity

1:19.8

to give more to the members. So during these times, when I put a rerun out that is available to

1:26.4

everyone, I also post additional bonus content in which Amanda, who does our activism and our

1:33.1

social media and also have it to be my girlfriend. We sit down and further mic together and have a

1:37.9

conversation about this through that. So far, we have been discussing, well, I did a sort of behind

1:44.2

the scenes discussion about how I came to the conclusion of how to craft a recent commentary.

1:52.1

It was the one about the way conservatives see gay and trans people and the story behind

1:58.3

how I came to that conclusion and some more of my thoughts behind it, I think were interesting
