Summary

Thomas Araujo, AKA "Dope As Yola" slides into The Wayback as we take a cruise through the late 90s/early 00s of Merced, CA. (Check out his podcast "Dope As Usual").  Thomas gets nostalgic about the freedom of growing up a San Joaquin Valley country boy, where he would drive his parent's pick up truck to the candy store as a 10-year old.  We also take a look at some of Thomas' old haunts, like his childhood home in Merced, the local carniceria, and the birthplace of his Dope As Yola empire.  We then reminisce about first concerts (the Spice Girls!), first R-rated movies, and a once mighty staple of the 90s, now lost to the dustbin of history -- the video store!

So I was talking to you before we got started here. You're 35, correct? Yes, sir. And you've never sat in this seat in your life. The turnaround seat. Like I said, we just have trucks and you get in the back of trucks.

2:06.0

Yeah. So tell me, tell us about that. The growing up. So, because also, you're making me have flashbacks now. Yeah, you weren't supposed to, but everybody rode in the back of a pickup truck back

2:11.4

in the day. Yeah, yeah. And my family's from the country. So I was driving my dad's pickup at like maybe fourth grade around the property,

2:19.4

made third grade. Just because as long as you don't go too fast, I learned how to downshift.

2:24.5

You know, I was not even eight, maybe 10. But that's how you learn. My whole family's truck driver.

2:29.3

So you were allowed to drive around as long as you stayed in eyesight. My dad was a drug addict,

2:34.0

so he wasn't really like, you know, like, I don't do that. He would probably be like, yo, you're supposed to, from four to five, like, he's trying to teach me how to drive more than he's like, don't crash the car. I would take it to the store, which is like quarter mile. How old were you when you first took the car on the street, a real street? It's the, it's like a country road. Yeah. But maybe third grade. Third grade. I think you're going to say 13. No. I was really stealing the car. That age right there. That's exactly how old I was. This kid's right there. Is that your sister? That's my sister. You two were in the car driving?
