Jen O'Yama Murphy. Jen, welcome back to the podcast. Thanks for having me back Adam.

I have asked you to join me today to talk about the U Diagram of Healing and the U Diagram was

0:19.8

developed by Kathy Lorzel. For those of you who don't know about it, I talk about it in great

0:26.0

detail in podcast episodes 24 to 26. I'm going to summarize Kathy's U Diagram in a moment.

0:34.9

And then today's episode will focus on some of Jen's thoughts about the U Diagram, which I have

0:41.9

found to be very helpful and enlightening and true. So let me summarize it. The U Diagram begins

0:49.7

with the premise that the core of the Christian narrative is contained in three days, Friday,

0:55.5

Saturday and Sunday. Jesus was crucified on a Friday. He was traumatized and abused. On Sunday,

Sunday happened. It happened. In order to get from the trauma of Friday to the healing of Sunday,

1:20.2

Jesus had to experience the hell of Saturday. And the U Diagram posits that what was true for

1:26.3

Jesus is true for us. There's no way to get from Friday to Sunday without going through

1:34.3

something of the hell of Saturday. In other words, without dipping down into the valley of the

1:39.1

shadow of death. So imagine a U in your mind. The very beginning of the U, the top left represents

1:47.5

Friday. The end of the U, the top right represents Sunday. That is healing. The bottom of the U

1:55.6

represents Saturday. And the Old Testament repeatedly uses three metaphors to describe the

2:02.8

Saturday experience. It talks about the wilderness, the desert, and the valley. Saturday is about

2:11.3

the wilderness. It's about the desert. It's about being in the valley of the shadow of death.

2:17.3

So one pattern of healing is this. Revisiting heartache in your family of origin, i.e. the crucifixion

2:25.8

of Friday leads you into the wilderness and the desert, the descent of Saturday, which ends in

2:33.7

healing the resurrection of Sunday. The U Diagram points out that what many of us want to do
