Summary

Tech policy has gotten scant attention in the 2016 election, but Uber and the sharing economy are starting to break through. While Trump hasn’t said much, if anything, about ride sharing, erstwhile Republican candidates like Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Carly Fiorina spoke favorably about the on-demand economy and urged government to largely stay out of the way. If the GOP is generally pro-Uber, are Democrats less uniform in their approach? How do Sanders and Clinton feel about the sharing economy? What about high-profile Dems like Elizabeth Warren. Evan is joined (again…) by Manhattan Institute fellow Jared Meyer to discuss Uber in the election and his new book Uber-Positive: Why Americans Love the Sharing Economy.

Welcome to the Tech Policy Podcast. I'm Evan Schwarger. On today's show, Uber, because we don't talk about it enough.

0:18.0

Joining me to discuss it is our longtime Uber guest, Jared Meyer,

0:22.5

research fellow at the Manhattan Institute. Jared, thanks for joining the show.

0:25.6

Hey, thanks for having me, Evan.

0:26.8

So, Jared, that book that we've mentioned on the show like five times, but that hadn't

0:30.5

actually come out yet is now out, and it's called Uber Positive, Why Americans Love the Shearing

0:35.5

Economy. And I got to tell you, if other books were as

0:39.1

short as yours, I might actually read more. Well, exactly. Yeah, it's only 40 pages long. So I had to

0:45.4

fit in all the reasons why Americans love Uber. And then also hint at all the reasons why Democrats

0:50.5

now apparently hate Uber, all in just 40 pages just so that you would read it.

0:55.6

Well, I can say that I have made some good progress. I can't promise that I've read every word,

1:02.6

but certainly enough for today's discussion. Before we get into the book, which chronicles Uber's

1:08.2

battle with Mayor Bill de Blasio in New York City. We've talked about a little bit on the show.

1:13.0

Some prominent folks in the Democratic Party, including Hillary Clinton and Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts, have recently made some comments about Uber.

1:21.3

And tech policy, as I've lamented on the show before, has really not been prominent in this election with what's going on with Donald Trump

1:29.4

and just the issues that people seem to care about like the rise of ISIS and other

1:34.1

pressing.

1:35.5

Yeah, building walls, right, of course.

1:37.7

Tech policy is just not really getting the prominence that it deserves.

1:41.5

But recently, Senator Elizabeth Warren, who many see as a

1:45.4

similar standard bearer for progressivism, the way that Bernie Sanders is, made some comments

1:50.3

about Uber. So, Jared, what did she say? And do you think she's wrong? Well, she had a lot to say.
