Trying to give you a little bit of basic information about the most recent pandemic of COVID-19.

0:09.3

I want to say a couple of things before I even get started.

0:12.1

This pandemic is evolving on a day-by-day basis.

This was recorded on March the 29th, and it will be immediately out of date as soon as I publish it.

virus itself is named SARS-CoV-2. It's an RNA virus that's part of the family of coronaviruses.

0:45.5

This family includes four viruses that are widely distributed and cause symptoms

1:07.7

is COVID-19. I'll just call the disease and the virus COVID to make this

1:12.9

simpler during this podcast. The virus incubates for up to 14 days with the median incubation

1:18.6

period of four days. Patients become sicker approximately 7 to 10 days after exposure, but this is

1:24.5

highly variable. Approximately 80% of patients have only mild symptoms

1:28.6

similar to a typical case of influenza, or can even be asymptomatic with no symptoms at all.

1:34.9

The data isn't very clear on how long a patient could be contagious after contracting the disease.

1:39.8

Repeat testing for virus may be positive for weeks, but it's not clear how contagious the patient

1:44.4

is more than eight days after recovery.
