Hey, what's up everyone. Welcome back to the show. I figured I would keep on theme with the houseplants. I'm kind of rolling down the houseplants Avenue right now.

And I wanted to talk about some more rare or some more interesting choices that you can grow that might not be the most popular right now

But certainly have a lot of botanical interest at least for me

So I'm growing a couple of these right now. My mother actually is experimenting with a few of these. I've finally gotten her on the house plant bug. So let's go ahead and talk about it. There are nine of them that I'm going to cover. The first one is going to be the desert rose. Adenium obesum, or obesum, I'm not sure which, is the correct

pronunciation as per usual, but this grows in Africa in the Middle East

natively true to its name it does love hot dry conditions

it looks a bit like a bonsai tree but actually the trunk is an adaptation for storing water and drought conditions as many plants that grow in desert areas do.

That means that if you're growing the desert rose, you'll want to give it nice amounts of light, really nice drainage, and then during the winter,

do not be alarmed that it drops its leaves because that's what happens.

It's going into dormancy.

Next one will be the banana shrub. So this is named for its sweet

and tropical scent not because it's actually related to the banana tree. Latin name is

Michaelia Figo or Figo and it's a member of the Magnolia family so it it

produces these similar cup-shaped blooms on these really compact shrubs.

They don't get larger than three feet tall, so it can be a really nice little shrub style house

plant for you to grow.

Here's a really interesting one. This is number three.

The climbing onion, Boiaya Volubilis. It is a fantastic specimen if you're new to house plants because

it shrugs off neglect.

You can really forget about it and it'll do just fine.

The bulb puts out vigorous shoots of lacy foliage

in the spring and then it'll go dormant in the fall.
