Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck. With the five things you need to know for Wednesday, September 6th.

I'm here first and foremost

to demonstrate our ongoing and determine support for Ukraine as it deals with this aggression.

That was U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinkin, speaking from Kyiv today on his third trip to the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war last year.

We want to make sure that Ukraine has what it needs not only to succeed in the counter-offensive,

but has what it needs for the long time.

The trip comes as Ukraine's counter-offensive moves into its fourth month, with concerns that progress

has been slow.

But both political and military leaders in Kyve are talking up recent gains, especially in the south of the country.

And a senior State Department official told reporters traveling with Blinkin that he would announce more than a billion dollars in new US funding.

CNN's Melissa Bell is in Kyve and explains why Blinckin's visit matters.

It comes at a critical juncture, first of all for counter-offensive and what we understand is

that Secretary Blinkin is here first of all to hear what the Ukrainian assessment

is of a counter-offensive, the State Department's assessment is that the gains have

been impressive but he's here to hear what the Ukrainians have to say about it.

What more help they need in terms of being

up to make progress on the battlefield.
