Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Monday, July 8th.

More than a million Texans have lost power, after Hurricane Beryl made landfall in the state early this morning.

CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller has more.

That's right Joe.

Hurricane Beryl roared ashore this morning at 5 a.m. over Matagorda, Texas, which is halfway

between Corpus Christi and Galveston, after strengthening back into a hurricane

overnight. Barrel had sustained winds of 80 miles per hour making it a

category one hurricane, but wind gusts have been observed

this morning between 90 and 100 miles per hour.

Now that it's on shore flooding will be barrels biggest threat.

Barrels bringing extreme rainfall rates more than 2 inches per hour right over the

populated cities of Houston and Galveston this morning and totals will get up to 8

inches before the storm pushes out of the area this afternoon.

Meanwhile a heat wave is continuing to shatter records across the US.

Las Vegas hit an all-time high of 120 degrees on Sunday.

And in California's Death Valley, temperatures topped 129 degrees.

One visitor there died over the weekend, and another person was taken to the hospital

due to the intense heat.

More Democrats are calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the race.

Sources tell CNN that in a call yesterday, more than a handful of house-ranking members told minority leader

Hakim Jeffries that Biden needs to step aside. The call was held to take the temperature

of how party members were feeling, after the president's pretty poor debate performance last month.
