Summary

By most estimates, 40% of the food in the U.S. is tossed – from expiration, restaurants, grocers. Some supermarkets route expiring food to food banks, but only a fraction. Some bagel shops sell them at 75% the next day. Some convenience stores sell off pastries at discounts to clear them out. U.S. restaurants have always served larger portions than elsewhere in the world. Our supersize mentality results in leftovers, which often get wasted. Some restaurants give you 2 price points to include a smaller portion. There are simple things we can do to reduce waste. Supermarkets should have an automatic strategy to mark down items at expiration. Christa reads listener posts about how Clark has missed the mark in his advice this week. If you're hearing me say this for the half a dozen times, I apologize.

0:45.9

But it just drives me to distraction that by most estimates, 40% of the food in the United States,

0:56.4

that we buy is thrown away. That it expires, restaurants end up throwing away a lot of food.

1:05.6

Anywhere you go, the food ends up being thrown away. In some cases,

1:12.4

it's really great where supermarkets have tie-ins with local food banks and route their

1:20.4

expiring food to food banks, where it is not wasted. And it does, in fact, provide food to families.

1:29.6

But that's only a tiny fraction of what's wasted. And I think about how over the years,

1:37.6

I've talked about specific places that have come up with ways to use the food instead of having

1:47.4

it wasted. I've given you the example of bagel shops that sell day-old bagels that normally they

1:54.8

would throw out. And they sell them 75% off because a bagel, well, generally you want it when it's

2:03.5

really fresh, but there are people who'd rather have 75% off and then they're not wasted.

2:08.7

Convenient stores that do a big business in donuts and pastries, from about 4am to 11am.

2:20.3

In the afternoon, a lot of them sell off their pastries and donuts a huge discount to clear them out.
