It's an absolutely glorious early October day.

I'm standing on the car ferry that basically goes on a loop back and forth between Messina

on the kind of northeast tip of Sicily.

And Villa da Giovanni, which is on the other side of the straits,

and literally it's two and a half miles, three miles across something like that.

I'm looking at the toe of Italy now, the sort of green, grey, bluey mountains.

It's all very Mediterranean and the twinkly Mediterranean sea below me.

I can see the bottom of the sea and a row of other ferries along the sea front here at Messino.

And of course, for me this just means the end of the Sicilian campaign

and the start of the Italian campaign.

I mean this is where it's all that crossing from the first island of Europe into the mainland of Europe.

And it's also where the Germans of course, escape 39,800 or whatever it was of them managing to escape
