Summary

I think we'd all say experienced gardeners offer priceless garden wisdom, but there's a group of people first-time gardeners can also learn from that's often overlooked: second-time gardeners. Still with a beginner's mindset, gardeners in their sophomore year recall details experienced gardeners forget.

It's kind of like how a mom of a toddler can offer something special to a mom of a newborn that a mother of teenagers can't. It's a "been there, done that" mindset that hasn't "been there, forgotten that."

Though I still consider myself a beginning gardener in so many ways -- we're all learning no matter how many seasons we've gardened -- I asked second-time gardeners in my Facebook group to share their top suggestions with their first-time peers. Most of the suggestions fell into a few categories.

In this episode of the Beginner's Garden Podcast, I share the six best tips beginning gardeners learned after their first season. Click to listen or continue reading below.

You're listening to the Beginners Garden podcast. I'm Jill McShehehehe with Journey Withjil.net,

0:06.1

and my goal is to give beginning gardeners the tools they need to grow a rewarding, productive garden. Hey there. I hope you're having a great garden season so far.

The other day, something came to my mind.

0:35.7

I was thinking about how sometimes the best garden advice,

0:39.9

maybe the most applicable garden advice that we can get, doesn't always come from the experts,

0:45.5

but instead it comes from someone who is just a step ahead of us, someone who is actually

0:52.7

still new to gardening themselves, but who remembers what it's like

0:56.5

to have all the questions, but who have also overcome lots of things and learned a lot and

1:02.2

still remembers it all. When I first started the Beginners Garden podcast in 2017, that's

1:07.5

exactly where I started. I didn't know much. I still had more questions than answers,

1:14.1

but I still felt like I could do something to help other beginning gardeners get a leg up

1:19.8

and maybe be able to get their gardens successful in a quicker manner than I was able to.

1:25.8

As the years go by and as I gain more experience, I hope to

1:29.3

still retain that beginner's eye. But in the meantime, learn more and more. I know there's some

1:36.4

advice that I've given in the past that I shudder to think about because it's not what I would

1:40.9

recommend now. But that's just life, you know. We live, we learn, we learn more,

1:45.7

and sometimes we have to change the way we do things because we have more information and more

1:50.6

experience behind us. But there's still something special about someone who has just begun

1:57.2

and has a little bit more experience than we do. That's why in the Beginners Garden Shortcut

2:03.1

Facebook group, which is a free Facebook group if you're not a member yet, I hope you'll join

2:07.2

us. I asked the question to second time gardeners, those who are starting their garden for the

2:13.6

second time this year. What was your biggest lesson from your first year?
